The ROAS Calculator takes campaign revenue, ad spend and your gross margin, and returns return on ad spend, ACOS, ROI and, most usefully, the break-even ROAS for that margin. The last of these is the one that turns a number into a decision.
The reason break-even matters is that ROAS on its own is close to meaningless. Asked what a good ROAS is, most sources answer 3x or 4x, which is a guess presented as a benchmark. The real answer depends entirely on margin. At an 80 percent gross margin you break even at 1.25x, so a 2x campaign is genuinely contributing. At a 20 percent margin you break even at 5x, and that identical 2x campaign is losing money on every order it generates. Same ROAS, opposite decision.
ROAS and ROI are also routinely conflated. ROAS is revenue divided by spend: a channel efficiency measure that ignores cost of goods entirely. ROI compares profit to investment and accounts for what the product actually cost you. It is entirely possible to report a strong ROAS to a board while the campaign loses money, and thin-margin businesses do it regularly. Reading both together is the guard against that.
ACOS is the same fact inverted. Advertising cost of sale is one divided by ROAS as a percentage, so 4x ROAS is 25 percent ACOS. It matters because marketplaces report ACOS while search and social teams speak in ROAS, and the two get compared without conversion more often than anyone admits. Both are shown here from the same inputs.
Use gross margin rather than net for the break-even input. Gross margin, revenue minus cost of goods, is the money actually available to cover advertising. Net margin usually has overheads and often advertising itself already deducted, so using it double-counts and produces a break-even target that is unreachably high.
One caution about the revenue figure. Platform-reported conversions use each platform's own attribution window and model, and each claims independently, so adding them up can produce more revenue than your accounts show. Blended ROAS, total revenue over total spend across every channel, is the number that reconciles, and it is worth maintaining alongside the per-platform view rather than instead of it.
Calculate break-even ROAS from your margin first, then judge campaigns against that rather than a borrowed benchmark
Track blended ROAS as well as per-platform, attribution overlap means the platform figures can sum to more revenue than you made
A high ROAS on a thin margin can still lose money, check ROI before scaling spend
If a marketplace reports ACOS and your team reports ROAS, convert before comparing, they are the same fact inverted
