The Markup and Margin Calculator converts between cost, selling price, margin and markup. Supply any two and it derives the other two, in either direction, and shows a conversion table so the relationship between the two percentages is visible rather than something you have to recompute.
The distinction matters more than its dryness suggests. Markup is profit expressed as a percentage of cost. Margin is the same profit expressed as a percentage of selling price. An item costing 100 and selling for 150 carries a 50 percent markup and a 33.3 percent margin. Identical money, two different numbers, and because the denominators differ the markup figure is always the larger one.
The confusion is expensive and unusually persistent. Someone instructed to hit a 40 percent margin who applies a 40 percent markup arrives at a price of 140 on a cost of 100, which is a 28.6 percent margin. Reaching a genuine 40 percent margin requires a price of 166.67. That is nearly 27 lost on every unit, and because the error is systematic rather than occasional it repeats across an entire catalogue without anybody noticing a single anomalous transaction.
The conversions themselves are simple once written down. Markup equals margin divided by one minus margin, so a 40 percent margin needs a 66.7 percent markup. Margin equals markup divided by one plus markup, so a 50 percent markup yields a 33.3 percent margin. The table makes the common values immediate.
For setting prices, work from margin. It is the figure your accounts report, the figure break-even analysis needs, and the figure anyone assessing the business will ask for. Markup remains a perfectly reasonable operational shortcut for applying a consistent uplift across many costs; the danger is not using it but using it while believing it is margin.
A useful sanity check: margin can never reach 100 percent, because profit cannot exceed the price it is a share of. Markup has no upper limit at all. So any quoted margin above 100 percent is a markup that has been mislabelled, and two profitability figures that look suspiciously similar usually mean the same number has been reported under both names.
