Image Grayscale converts a colour image to black and white, producing a monochrome version with a live preview, for a classic photographic look, print, design consistency, or removing distracting colour.
A quality conversion isn't a flat average of the colour channels: it weights them by perceived brightness, green contributes most to how light a colour looks to the eye, then red, then blue, which yields a natural, well-toned grayscale rather than a muddy or oddly-dark result.
Worth distinguishing: grayscale includes the full range of gray tones between black and white, unlike strict bitonal 'black and white' which has only two values. This tool produces the rich tonal grayscale that makes a monochrome photo look good. It can reduce file size somewhat (less colour data), but the main reasons to convert are aesthetic, consistency, or print-related, for size, compression does more.
