The GIF Maker takes a sequence of still images and encodes them into a real animated GIF, in your browser, with no upload. The output is a standard GIF, which is the point: it plays in chat apps, documents, email clients and every browser, with no player and no plugin.

The frames are the images you add, in the order you add them, and you can drag to reorder before exporting. The one control that shapes the result is the frame delay, which is how long each frame is held on screen. About 100 milliseconds reads as motion; 500 or more reads as a slideshow, which is what you want when each frame is a screenshot somebody has to actually read.

It is worth understanding what GIF can and cannot do, because both of its limits surprise people. The first is colour: a GIF frame holds at most 256 colours. Screenshots, diagrams and line art fit inside that comfortably. Photographs and gradients do not, and get reduced, which shows up as banding. The second is size: GIF has no modern compression, so file size grows with both dimensions and frame count, and a photographic GIF is always going to be big.

Both limits point at the same practical advice: resize your frames down before adding them, and use fewer frames held longer rather than many frames you had to shrink to compensate. A 600-pixel-wide, 12-frame GIF at 150 milliseconds is a perfectly good product demo and stays a reasonable size; the same content at full screenshot resolution will not.

Transparency works differently in GIF than you may expect. There is one fully transparent colour rather than a real alpha channel, so soft edges and feathered shadows cannot be represented and come out with a hard fringe. Where you can, compose the animation on the background colour it will sit on.

Everything runs on your device. The frames are decoded, palettised and encoded in the browser tab, so nothing you add is uploaded and the finished GIF is assembled locally before you download it.
