The Credit Card Payoff Calculator answers two questions that card statements are not designed to make obvious: how long the balance will take to clear at what you are currently paying, and how much interest that costs in total. Both numbers tend to be considerably worse than people expect, and seeing them is usually the point at which a plan changes.
The reason minimum payments stretch so far is structural. A minimum is typically a small percentage of the outstanding balance, so as the balance falls the required payment falls with it. The schedule flattens out, a large share of each payment goes to interest, and the principal comes down very slowly. On a typical card APR, clearing a balance on minimums alone can take well over a decade and cost more in interest than the amount originally borrowed.
The corollary is the encouraging half. Because interest accrues on what remains, any payment above the minimum attacks the principal directly, and the effect on the schedule is disproportionate. A modest increase frequently removes years rather than months. Raising the payment figure and watching both outputs move is the most useful thing you can do with this tool.
Balance transfers are worth evaluating with the same arithmetic rather than on instinct. Compare the interest projected at your current APR against the transfer fee, typically a few percent of the balance, plus whatever interest applies after the promotional period ends. The comparison is usually clear-cut. The common failure is not the maths but the follow-through: transferring, feeling relieved, and arriving at the end of the promotional period with most of the balance intact.
One behaviour matters more than the payment amount, and it is worth stating plainly: stop spending on the card you are clearing. Most cards remove the interest-free grace period on new purchases once you are carrying a balance, so new spending starts accruing immediately and works directly against the plan.
The projection assumes a fixed APR. Most card rates are variable, and promotional rates end on a date. If yours is promotional, run the calculation at the rate that will apply afterwards as well, because that is the rate the remaining balance will actually face. Everything runs in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
Pay anything above the minimum, the extra goes almost entirely against principal and shortens the schedule disproportionately
Stop spending on the card you are clearing, carrying a balance usually removes the interest-free grace on new purchases too
Compare a balance-transfer fee against the interest shown here, the comparison is usually decisive one way or the other
Run it at the post-promotional APR if your rate is temporary, that is the rate the remaining balance will meet
