CAGR Calculator computes the Compound Annual Growth Rate — the smoothed annual rate at which a value grew over a period — from the beginning value, ending value, and number of years.
The formula, (ending ÷ beginning)^(1/years) − 1, converts total growth into a single comparable yearly figure, which is why CAGR is the standard for expressing investment and business growth. It lets you compare opportunities of different durations on an equal, annualised basis.
Its key advantage over a simple average is honesty about compounding. Averaging yearly returns is misleading: a +100% year followed by a −50% year averages to +25% but actually leaves you break-even — and CAGR correctly reports 0%. That's why CAGR, not the arithmetic average, is the truthful measure of growth over time.
Its limitation is the flip side: by smoothing, it hides volatility, so two investments with identical CAGR could have had very different (and differently risky) journeys. Read it alongside the actual path and risk. It's informational, not financial advice, and runs in your browser. Pair it with the Compound Interest, SIP, and other ToolsMonk finance calculators.
Use CAGR, not a simple average of yearly returns — averages overstate performance by ignoring compounding
Remember CAGR smooths volatility; check the actual year-to-year path and risk too
It works for any metric — revenue, users, investments — over a known number of years
