A sitemap is a list of the URLs you want search engines to know about, and small mistakes in it are easy to miss because nothing visibly breaks. Sitemap Validator fetches a live sitemap, crawls your site to build one, or takes XML you paste, then scores it from 0 to 100 against the rules engines actually enforce.
The structural checks cover well-formed XML, whether the file is a urlset or a sitemap index, and the 50,000-URL and 50 MB per-file limits, with a suggestion for splitting when you cross them. The deeper checks catch the problems that quietly reduce trust in a sitemap: relative URLs, duplicates, a mix of hosts or of http and https, invalid W3C dates in lastmod, and pages whose lastmod is more than a year old.
You can fix things in place. Edit URLs in a table with per-URL lastmod and include toggles, or edit the raw XML, and both views re-validate as you type. The site crawl respects robots.txt, merges any sitemap it finds and leaves out pages marked noindex, which is the single most common contradiction in a hand-made sitemap.
Keep lastmod honest: engines learn to ignore dates that change on every deploy without the content changing. Once the file is clean, reference it from robots.txt with the Sitemap line the tool generates and submit it once in Search Console. Resubmitting after every edit is not needed; the engine re-reads it on its own schedule. Because this tool fetches pages for you, the URLs you enter are requested by our server.
