The most important concept to get right is what robots.txt does and doesn't do. It controls crawling, not indexing. Disallowing a URL stops compliant crawlers from fetching it, but the URL can still surface in search results if it's linked elsewhere, so to actually keep a page out of Google, you use a noindex tag, not a disallow rule.

Used well, robots.txt steers crawlers away from genuinely private or low-value paths (admin areas, internal search, duplicate parameter URLs) and points them to your sitemap. Used carelessly, it can backfire, accidentally blocking CSS, JavaScript, or whole sections harms how Google renders and ranks your pages, so block deliberately.

Remember it must sit at the domain root to be found. Generation, linting and path testing all run in your browser, so the file you are writing is never uploaded; the only thing that leaves your device is the site address you type if you choose to fetch an existing robots.txt to audit, which our server retrieves for you and does not store.
