Repair PDF attempts to fix damaged or corrupted PDF files by re-parsing their content and rebuilding a clean structure, salvaging documents that won't open or throw errors.
It's most effective on structural corruption, where the page content still exists but the file's internal structure (the cross-reference table and object map) is broken, often from an interrupted download, a crash during export, or a storage glitch. Rebuilding that structure can make an unopenable file usable again.
Be realistic about its limits, though: if a file is heavily damaged, truncated, or has genuinely lost its content data, there may be nothing to recover, since repair can only rebuild from what remains. It's a best-effort salvage, not a guarantee, so keep your backup, and if a bad download caused the problem, simply re-downloading the original is often the cleaner fix.
