The Paycheck Calculator estimates United States take-home pay from a gross salary or hourly wage. It applies the 2024 federal progressive brackets and standard deduction, the full FICA set including the Additional Medicare surcharge, a flat state rate, and any pre-tax deductions you enter, then shows the result per paycheck on your actual pay schedule.
The most useful thing it makes visible is the difference between your marginal rate and your effective rate. Progressive tax is marginal: crossing into the 24 percent bracket taxes only the income above that threshold, not the whole salary. That is why a raise can never reduce take-home pay, a belief that persists because the brackets are usually explained badly. Your effective rate, the share of your gross that actually goes in tax, is always lower than your top bracket.
The second is what a pre-tax 401(k) really costs. A traditional contribution comes out before income tax, so at a 22 percent marginal rate a 200 contribution reduces your paycheck by roughly 156. It does not, however, reduce FICA: Social Security and Medicare are charged on the full amount either way. Adjusting the contribution percentage and watching net pay move is the fastest way to find a rate you can live with.
It is worth being precise about the state approximation, because it is the largest source of difference between this estimate and a real stub. State tax is modelled as one flat rate. For the states with no income tax that is exact. For states with a genuinely flat rate it is close to exact. For states running their own progressive brackets, or with city and county taxes layered on, it is an approximation that will be roughly right rather than precise.
Other reasons your real paycheck will differ: your W-4 settings, health insurance, HSA and FSA contributions, union dues, garnishments, and post-tax deductions, none of which are modelled. Bonuses are commonly withheld at a flat supplemental rate rather than your marginal one. And withholding is only an estimate of your eventual tax bill; the reconciliation happens when you file.
This is an estimate, not tax advice, and everything runs in your browser so your salary never leaves your device. It is built for comparing offers and planning contributions. For filing, or any decision with real money resting on the exact number, use your pay stub, the IRS withholding estimator, or a tax professional.
Compare offers on net pay in the state you would live in, a higher gross in a high-tax state can lose to a lower gross elsewhere
Read your effective rate rather than your marginal rate when you want to know what you actually pay
A pre-tax 401(k) costs less take-home than it adds to the account, but it does not reduce FICA
Check the result against a real pay stub once, the gap is usually your W-4 or a deduction this does not model
