Margin and markup describe the same profit against different bases: margin is profit over the selling price, markup is profit over the cost. That distinction isn't academic, a 50% markup is only a 33% margin, because the same profit is a smaller slice of the larger price. Mixing them up is one of the most common and costly pricing errors.
It particularly matters when pricing for a target. To achieve a 40% margin you divide cost by (1 − 0.40), not add 40% to cost (which is markup and falls short). A business that applies a 40% markup while aiming for a 40% margin actually earns only about 29%, a real shortfall that compounds across every sale.

To hit a target margin, divide cost by (1 − margin), don't just add the percentage (that's markup and earns less)
