Essay Word Counter

Essay Word Counter gives a live count of words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs as you write, so you can hit an assignment's word limit precisely without constant manual checking.

The first thing to nail down is what counts. Word-limit rules vary by institution, many exclude the title, references, footnotes, and appendices, counting only the main body, while others count differently, so checking your specific assignment guidelines matters, since going over a strict limit can cost marks.

On tolerance, many institutions allow roughly ±10%, but it's not universal: some are strict, some penalise overshooting, and a few penalise being well short (a sign of underdeveloped work). The safe approach is to land comfortably within range rather than testing the edge.

Crucially, hit the target by improving content, not padding, develop points with evidence to grow, or cut redundancy to shrink. Markers spot filler easily, and quality within the limit always beats reaching the number with waffle. Counting runs in your browser, so your work stays private.
