Measure your waist at the narrowest point between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, standing relaxed and breathing out
Measure your hips at the widest point around the buttocks, with the tape level
Enter both plus your height, in centimetres or inches
Read the waist-to-hip ratio with its WHO band, and the waist-to-height ratio against the 0.5 rule
Calculates waist-to-hip ratio and grades it against the WHO sex-specific risk thresholds
Also calculates waist-to-height ratio, the keep your waist under half your height rule
Both ratios are unit-invariant, and inputs can be entered in centimetres or inches
Shows where you sit on each scale rather than only printing a number
Saves results so central adiposity can be tracked over time
Your BMI looks fine but you carry weight around the middle and want a measure that sees that
You are muscular and BMI overstates your risk, so you want a measure that is not confounded by lean mass
You want a screening check that needs nothing but a tape measure
You are tracking whether waist measurement is falling even when the scale has not moved

Two people can share a body weight, a height and therefore a BMI while carrying that weight in completely different places, and the difference matters. Fat stored subcutaneously around the hips and thighs behaves differently from visceral fat packed around the liver, pancreas and intestines. Visceral fat is metabolically active, contributes to insulin resistance and inflammation, and is the deposit most strongly associated with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Waist-to-hip ratio is a cheap proxy for that distribution. Dividing waist by hip circumference gives a figure that rises as weight concentrates centrally, and because it is a ratio it needs no unit conversion: centimetres and inches give the same answer. The WHO thresholds of 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women mark substantially increased risk.
Waist-to-height ratio has gained ground as the simpler alternative. One threshold, 0.5, applies across both sexes and most adult populations, and it is easy to remember: keep your waist under half your height. It avoids the hip measurement entirely, which is the one people most often take inconsistently.
The measurement technique is the weak link in both. A centimetre of difference in where the tape sits changes the ratio more than months of genuine change, so consistency matters more than precision. Measure at the same landmark, at the same time of day, breathing out normally, with the tape snug and level.
Both ratios are screening prompts, not diagnoses. They cannot see blood pressure, lipids, blood glucose or family history, and the published thresholds are population averages that fit some ethnic groups better than others. Everything here is calculated in your browser with nothing uploaded, and a raised ratio is a reason for a conversation with a clinician rather than a conclusion.
Measure at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before eating, because abdominal measurements move noticeably after meals
Use a tape that does not stretch, and measure over bare skin or a single thin layer rather than over clothing
Take the measurement twice and use the average: a centimetre of tape placement changes the ratio more than a week of effort does
Waist alone is often the more useful number to track. The hip measurement changes slowly, so a falling ratio is usually a falling waist
