Human hearing is conventionally described as spanning 20 Hz to 20 kHz, but that is the range of a healthy young ear and almost nobody keeps all of it. Sensitivity at the top declines from adolescence onward as the hair cells in the cochlea that respond to high frequencies are gradually lost. That process, presbycusis, is universal and largely unavoidable, though noise exposure accelerates it considerably.
The frequencies that carry speech sit much lower, roughly 250 Hz to 8 kHz, which is why someone can lose everything above 14 kHz and notice nothing in conversation. Consonants such as s, f and th carry most of their energy in the 2 to 6 kHz region, so loss concentrated there does far more damage to understanding than loss at the very top.
This screen plays pure sine tones and asks whether you can hear each one. It deliberately fades each tone in and out rather than switching it on abruptly, because a hard start produces a broadband click that is audible even when the tone itself is not, which would let you mark a frequency as heard when you only heard the click.
What it cannot do is measure. A clinical audiogram plots the quietest level you can detect at each frequency in decibels of hearing level, using headphones calibrated against a reference and a room quiet enough for the measurement to mean something. Here, the level arriving at your ear is whatever your device and volume setting produce, so a tone you cannot hear may be inaudible or may simply be quiet.
Use it as a prompt, not an answer. If a frequency you would expect to hear is missing, if one ear differs from the other, if there is ringing, or if speech in a noisy room has become hard work, those are all reasons to see an audiologist.
